It is a great challange presenting someone with all the diversity of slovenian wine growing regions. Map is a perfect tool for this task, so I made an interactive one.
I based my map on all the parcels that slovenian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food registers as vineyards in their land use monitoring program database published in 2017. Distribution of this parcels in space shows us many characteristics of different wine growing landscapes in Slovenia. One can notice geographic features from specific regions to smaller areas and terroirs. This layer allows us to explore slovenian wine landscapes until the smallest detail, that is, to the smallest vineyard.
The areas of wine growing regions where drawn based upon legal definitions for wine labeling,in which borders of specific areas are described in text. To this areas I added information about varieties of vines grown in the area. The number of slovenian wine regions (3) and areas (9) shows just how geographicaly diverse Slovenia is. This goes well with general direction of promoting Slovenia as a small country with many treasures. To all turist slogans we can add another: Wherever in Slovenia - there is good wine in reach.
Additionally I produced an information database that serves as a tool in promoting small and family owned winemakers, that would like to invite their custumers to their place of buisness, wine cellar or "zidanica" and show which vineyards they tend to and how.
Database contains two parts: a pointcloud, with locations of estates and basic information about services they offer and contact detail; second part contains areas, vineyards of estate, that have information about the variety of vine planted, its age, the type of pruning...
